Companion Planting: A special garden group of volunteers

In 2019, the Nature Trust initiated a project to create a native species garden at Nature’s House in downtown Dartmouth. It is now cared for by a passionate group of volunteers, whose dedication and expertise have fostered a most pleasant and productive ecosystem not only for the native species but also among each other. Their work exemplifies the larger purpose of the Nature Trust – that by working together, nature can thrive.

A love of conservation from New Zealand to Nova Scotia

Over recent months, Gemma Burns has been researching and writing profiles about important representative species found on Nature Trust conservation lands. It’s been a great way for us to share short tidbits of important information about birds, plants or other wildlife through our newsletters or social media, and has also been a great way for Gemma, originally from New Zealand, to become more familiar with the different species found in Nova Scotia. Jacqui Reeves: Tending Nature’s Garden

With everything that’s happened over the past year (events moved online, staff working primarily from home, etc.), the garden of our downtown Dartmouth office, Nature’s House, has grown quite wild - a bit more wild than we intended! Fortunately, having volunteered with the original planting process, our Volunteer of the Month Jacqui Reeves was well equipped to help out with some expert gardening care.

All the Way from Brazil: Office Volunteer Arlete Casagrande

Recently arrived from Brazil, Arlete joined our office volunteer team in 2019. At the time, she was studying at NSCC and was looking for opportunities to engage with her new community. She reminisces, “As a newcomer, it can be challenging to get to know people outside of the academic environment. Volunteering helped me to overcome the emptiness and sadness of living in a new country, where you don't know anyone. It gave me a purpose.”
