Raising funds for nature with pottery art

01 Mar 2023

For 11 years, LiLynn Wan has been the talented heart and hands behind WaterDragon Pottery, based in Portugese Cove near Halifax. Her stunning pieces have been a favourite of customers at several markets, including the Halifax Farmers Market, and Hubbards Market where she has developed a loyal fan base of pottery lovers.

From the very beginning of her business, LiLynn made a commitment to give something back to her community. Each year she organizes an annual fundraising sale of her products, donating proceeds from her sale to a local organization. This year, she chose to raise funds for the Nature Trust.

“I was raised in a family who always gave back to the community in some way, and I have continued with that same philosophy – of course it’s good to do, but I get a lot out of it too,” says LiLynn. “I think that many people want to give, but sometimes they just don’t know how, so my effort through the sale of pottery might inspire others to give in some way too.”

Although she started out as a big city kid from Vancouver, LiLynn moved many times when she was young, and eventually settled in Halifax. Times were lean when her son was born, so they spent lots of time outdoors, and LiLynn became enchanted with Nova Scotia’s natural beauty. It was a time in her life when she reconnected with her lifelong love of nature.

“I was the kid with a picture of David Suzuki in my locker, and I was the one and only member of the Environmental Club!”

LiLynn’s love of nature is still strong today and this year she chose to support the Nature Trust as a way to help save more natural places, and to educate more people about the importance of land conservation.

“It’s so important for all of us. Nature is life, it’s the air we breathe, the water we drink, and it replenishes our spirit. Every little contribution we can make adds up to make a real difference.”

You can see the influence of natural elements in the beautiful pieces that she creates, and we are so thankful for her generous spirit.
