Many people choose to remember the Nova Scotia Nature Trust with a bequest.

A gift to us in your will, whether large or small, helps protect irreplaceable habitats for future generations, provides a tax credit for your estate, and creates a lasting natural legacy in your name. Your bequest will have a lasting effect on conservation in Nova Scotia.

You may choose to bequeath the Nature Trust a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate. Email Barbara Haley, Philanthropy Director, to request sample language to use in your will.

When you have named the Nova Scotia Nature Trust in your will, please let us know! You will join our Legacy Circle. You will be invited to a special afternoon tea, and we will keep you updated on our work.

Restricted or Unrestricted Bequests

Your gift can be left unrestricted so we can utilize your funds in the best way possible, given our current operational needs. Alternatively, you can restrict your gift to certain projects or purposes.

In general, if you do not restrict your gift, we will place your bequest in our endowment funds, which means that the principal will always remain intact, and the income generated will help provide ongoing funds for the work of protecting Nova Scotia’s outstanding natural legacy, forever.

If a gift in your Will is for a specific purpose, it is strongly recommended that a “Power to Vary” clause (see below) be included. Without this clause, if our projects or operating systems change, we may not be able to use your generous gift.

Here is a sample Power to Vary clause:

‘If, in the opinion of the Board of Directors of the Nova Scotia Nature Trust, it should become impossible, inadvisable, or impractical to use this gift for the special purpose(s), then the Board may in their discretion use the gift to the best advantage of Nova Scotia Nature Trust, keeping in mind the original wishes of the donor and keeping as close as possible to the spirit and general intent of the gift, while respecting the priorities of Nova Scotia Nature Trust.’

Please ensure you use our full legal name and charitable registration number in your will:

Our legal name is: Nova Scotia Nature Trust

And our Charitable Registration number is: 88962 7691 RR0001
