Farley Mowat: Our Patron for Coastal Conservation

A passionate environmentalist, Farley Mowat is greatly concerned with the state of the natural landscape in Nova Scotia, a province he loves. An officer of the Order of Canada, and a prolific and high-profile Canadian author, Mowat is a Canadian literary icon. He has also long been an advocate for conserving and caring for the environment, and has found a natural extension for this in supporting the Nature Trust’s work to preserve land in Nova Scotia.
Farley and his wife Claire came to Cape Breton 30 years ago searching for a place where they could reside peacefully in an undisturbed natural setting. This beautiful and pristine coastal property, affectionately called “Farley’s Ark,” has been the Mowats’ writing retreat and spiritual home ever since. In contemplating what to do with his treasured land to ensure its future preservation, Farley turned to the Nature Trust.
In September of 2007, Farley and Claire donated over 200 acres of coastal land to the Nature Trust, following through on his convictions with an action that will forever tell the story of his love for the natural world.
In recognition of Farley Mowat’s tremendous donation, the Nature Trust is pleased to call him our Patron for our Campaign for the Coast.
The Nature Trust is also excited by our 2008 Membership Drive, which is an effort to get more Nova Scotians on board with the cause of protecting their own province. Having authored the letter that we will be sending to thousands of Nova Scotians to inform them about our work and that we hope to involve, Farley’s voice is reaching the people that can make a real difference to saving the land of Nova Scotia.
