Medway River Conservation Lands (Donation)
74 acres in Riversdale, Queen's County
Donated by Ponhook Fish & Game Club
Significance
Critical habitat for the Long's Bulrush, a species that is considered globally at risk, as well as over 10,000 feet of undeveloped, pristine river frontage.
Details
The Ponhook Fish & Game Club owned these beautiful lands for generations, using them seasonally for recreation. As the Club members - most of whom are American - traveled less and less to Nova Scotia, they considered the future of the land. By making this generous donation to the Nature Trust, the Club has significantly contributed to the survival of an important species at risk, and ensured that this special place will be preserved forever in the same spirit of nature appreciation and conservation.
Nova Scotia is home to a unique group of plants called the Atlantic coastal plain flora, of which the Long's Bulrush is one. Long’s Bulrush is a unique sedge species that exhibits a circular growth pattern, and produces clones that can grow up to 400 years old, if undisturbed. This site provides habitat for three colonies of the Long's Bulrush, as well as the Buttonbush plant, also listed in Nova Scotia.
