A Sense of Wonder

Continuing the Nature Trust's tradition of partnering with the arts community, the Nature Trust brought its conservation message to Nova Scotians across the province through a powerful performing arts production, "A Sense of Wonder." This play celebrates the remarkable life and legacy of Rachel Carson - scientist, poet, activist and humanist.
Rachel Carson changed the world. Time Magazine put her on its list of the 100 most influential people of the century. She was the first scientist to warn us of the dangers of chemical pesticides.
This one-woman show, written and performed by the acclaimed American actress Kaiulani Lee, brilliantly brings together Rachel Carson's many sides. The Nature Trust held performances in Halifax, Wolfville, and Antigonish in May 2006.
"…the play was just enchanting and very emotional… Rachel Carson was a great
hero to me and shaped my environmentalism. Her words are every bit as relevant
today as they were 45 years ago."
- David Suzuki
On CBC Radio arts producer Phlis McGregor recently talked to Liz Crocker about Rachel Carson and the play. Liz Crocker is a fan who previously brought "A Sense of Wonder" to Halifax. Click here to Listen (Realplayer required).
About Rachel Carson
Rachel Carson has been called "the patron saint of the environmental movement." She was a marine biologist and zoologist best known for her book Silent Spring, which alerted the world to the dangers of chemical pesticides and launched our modern environmental movement.
Less known is that Miss Carson was one of America's great poets of the natural world. In her earlier works she brought alive the beauty and the mystery of the seas and its creatures to millions of readers.
In their purest form the poet and the scientist are one and the same. They
are seekers after truth. Through the power of her knowledge and the beauty of
her language, Rachel Carson became one of the great champions of the living.
